Illustrative example
A different percentage base explains the difference
- Eligible subtotal
- USD 1,000
- Percentage first
- 100 deduction, then fixed 100 / final 800
- Fixed first
- 100 deduction, then 10% of 900 / final 810
- Difference
- USD 10
- Release basis
- Actual approved order and scope
Fictional pre-issue comparison; tax and issued corrections remain separately reviewed.

A stacked-discount review checks more than the two discount labels. It identifies which charges qualify, the exact operation order and the approval evidence. Stripe's documentation notes that fixed and percentage deductions can produce different results when their order changes; the actual permitted order remains a commercial decision.
Start from one eligible before-tax subtotal. Compare percentage-then-fixed with fixed-then-percentage, noting each percentage base and cent-rounding point. If a fixed amount cannot fit after the percentage step, resolve eligibility and terms instead of silently capping it or presenting a negative invoice subtotal.
The fictional USD 1,000 subtotal with 10% and USD 100 leaves USD 800 when percentage is first and USD 810 when fixed is first. The USD 10 difference explains a possible mismatch. It does not authorize either discount or establish which amount the client should be charged.

Outcome
Use this page to move from general research into a calmer, more repeatable invoicing process.
Work through the billing decision
Confirm scope and actual decision
Identify eligible lines, exclusions, currency and approval references. Separate a pre-issue discount from a timing-qualified offer or issued-document correction.
Compare order and rounding
Calculate both valid operations and show their percentage bases. Check remaining amounts and reproduce the arithmetic under the authorized method.
Review the final application
Use the actual approved order and verify eligible lines and document version. Confirm tax treatment separately and hold unexplained differences before release.

Avoid this
Adding the two discount descriptions loosely
A fixed amount changes the base if applied first. Preserve the actual calculation sequence.
Avoid this
Selecting the lower result without authority
The comparison explains a difference; it does not negotiate or approve the commercial terms.

Questions people usually have before changing the workflow.
Is an early-payment discount the same review?
No. Its qualifying amount and deadline need their own evidence and terms.
Does the tool cap an excessive fixed deduction?
No. It rejects a value that cannot fit the comparison's remaining base so the issue stays visible.
Can discounts apply to expenses?
Only under the actual approved eligibility. This guide supplies no default right to deduct them.
