Working backwards from an inclusive total begins by checking what the total contains. In a simple single-percentage model, divide by one plus the decimal rate to recover the before-tax base. This differs from adding tax to a subtotal or multiplying the already-inclusive amount by the rate.
GOV.UK illustrates that division method for UK VAT-inclusive prices. The companion tool generalizes the arithmetic to an entered percentage but does not generalize the UK's rate or eligibility rules to other transactions. Confirm applicability, required invoice fields and rounding treatment independently before using a final breakdown.
With fictional USD 1,200 and illustrative entered 20%, the components are USD 1,000 and USD 200. For USD 10 at entered 7.5%, this tool rounds the before-tax component to USD 9.30 and assigns USD 0.70 residual tax. Another required line-level method can produce a different split.

Work through the billing decision
Verify the known total and model
Confirm currency, inclusive status and the one applicable percentage from actual evidence. Exclude mixed-rate or special treatments from this simple calculation.
Divide and reconcile components
Use inclusive divided by 1 + rate/100, round the before-tax result to cents and calculate residual tax. Check that the components preserve the known total.
Check actual required treatment
Compare the method with your billing system and applicable requirements. Resolve line-rounding or classification differences with the appropriate reviewer before release.

Avoid this
Extracting tax as inclusive total times rate
That applies the rate to the wrong base in this model. Divide first to identify the before-tax amount.
Avoid this
Treating the numeric model as tax advice
An entered rate does not decide registration, exemption, recoverability or the required document type.

Questions people usually have before changing the workflow.
Can the tool decide my tax rate?
No. Its example rates are illustrative inputs, and it does not retrieve applicable rates.
What about a mixed-rate invoice?
Review separate correctly classified groups and the required method instead of applying one rate to the combined total.
Does zero rate prove exempt status?
No. Numeric zero and legal classification are different questions.
